Description
Saxenda contains liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. It is licensed as an addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for weight management in adults whose body mass index is 30 or more, or 27 or more alongside a weight-related condition such as raised blood pressure, abnormal blood fats or type 2 diabetes.
It is injected under the skin of the stomach, thigh or upper arm once a day, at any time of day, with or without food. The dose begins low and is increased in weekly steps to limit side effects. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation are common, particularly while the dose is rising. Treatment is reviewed after a set period and stopped if the response is not adequate.
Tell your prescriber if you have thyroid disease, a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder or kidney problems, or if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy.
