Description
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. It is licensed as an addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for weight management in adults whose body mass index is 30 or more, or 27 or more alongside a weight-related condition such as raised blood pressure, abnormal blood fats, obstructive sleep apnoea or type 2 diabetes.
It is injected under the skin of the stomach, thigh or upper arm once a week, on the same day each week, with or without food. The dose starts at 0.25mg and is raised in stages over several months to the maintenance dose. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation are common, especially as the dose increases. Tell your prescriber if you have a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, diabetic eye disease, kidney problems, or if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy.
