Description
Utovlan contains norethisterone 5mg, a progestogen. It has several uses in gynaecology, including heavy or painful periods, endometriosis, and postponing a period. When used to delay a period it maintains the lining of the womb so that bleeding does not begin; a period normally arrives two or three days after the last tablet.
The tablets are started a few days before the period is expected and taken several times a day while the delay is needed, for a limited time only. At this dose the tablets do not prevent pregnancy, so continue your usual contraception. Tell your prescriber if you have had a blood clot, liver disease, unexplained bleeding from the vagina, a hormone-dependent cancer, or if you get migraine.
Progestogens can cause breast tenderness, nausea, headache and changes in mood. Read the leaflet supplied with the tablets before the first dose.
