Description
Champix is the brand name for varenicline tablets, a prescription only medicine used to help adults stop smoking. Varenicline acts on the nicotine receptors in the brain, which both reduces craving and withdrawal symptoms and lessens the satisfaction gained from smoking if a cigarette is smoked. A course usually begins one to two weeks before a chosen quit date, with the dose stepped up over the first week and then continued for around twelve weeks.
It works best alongside behavioural support rather than on its own. Tell the prescriber about any history of depression or other mental health problems, epilepsy or seizures, or kidney problems, and about pregnancy or breastfeeding. Nausea and vivid dreams are the most commonly reported effects. Read the leaflet supplied with the medicine before starting.
