Description
Evra is a thin patch that delivers norelgestromin and ethinylestradiol through the skin, making it a combined hormonal contraceptive. It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg. One patch is applied to clean, dry skin on the buttock, abdomen, upper outer arm or upper back, and is changed on the same day each week for three weeks, followed by a patch-free week when a bleed usually happens.
Use a different site each time, and avoid the breasts and any broken or irritated skin. The patch may be less effective in women who weigh ninety kilograms or more. Combined hormonal contraception raises the risk of a blood clot in a vein, and is not suitable with migraine with aura, some clotting conditions, or smoking over the age of thirty-five. It gives no protection against sexually transmitted infections.
