Description
A hand held meter that measures peak expiratory flow, the fastest speed at which air can be blown out in one hard breath. It is used mainly to monitor asthma over time, comparing each reading against a person’s own best rather than a single fixed number. Set the pointer to zero, take a full breath in, seal the lips around the mouthpiece and blow one short hard blast; three attempts are made and the best is recorded.
Readings are typically lower in the morning, so taking them at the same times each day makes the pattern clearer. The meter measures airflow only and does not confirm or exclude a diagnosis. Use readings alongside an agreed action plan.
